Keep Mosquitoes from Bugging You This Summer
May 12, 2015
As summer BBQ's and pool parties are being planned it is time to start thinking about what you can do with your landscape to keep pesky mosquitos from driving your guests back indoors. Here in the Houston area we experience a combination of warm weather and frequent rains which allow mosquitos to breed and become bothersome more than in cooler or dryer climates. Following a few simple suggestions can reduce the number of mosquitos in your yard, keeping people and pets more comfortable.
1. Keep grass mowed - Letting your grass get too long will allow moisture to build up and create a damp environment for mosquitos to hide. Of course you don't want to trim too short and allow your grass to burn so moderation is key.
2. Trim trees and shrubs to reduce shade - Mosquitos love to live in the shady areas of your yard. Pruning your trees and shrubs to let more light shine through will drive out mosquitos!
2. Get rid of any standing water - Look for hidden standing water that may be left in birdbaths, flowerpots, children's toys, play equipment, or fire pits. Fill in low spots in your yard where water collects after rain. If you cannot remove the standing water you can put tablets which kill mosquito larvae into ponds, ditches, or other water features.
3. Add mosquito repell
ing plants - Some plants such as Lavender, Lemongrass, Lemon balm, and Citronella naturally repel mosquitos and make attractive additions to your flowerbeds or pots. Including these plants in your landscaping can deter pesky mosquitos while also adding pleasant smells and looking great.
4. Insecticide Treatments - There are many great do-it-yourself treatments available at garden centers and big box stores. From foggers to treatments that connect to your garden hose you can find one that fits your budget and needs. Just be cautious as these treatments need to be done away from children and pets and with time to dry before the yard is in use.
